Chapter Twelve

Tuesday, June 3rd.

Fast Horses Ranch. North Pueblo Road.

Meg opened her eyes, and Sloan was smiling at her. His face not a foot away from her own.

“I sent you a mental message to wake up.”

“Message received. Should I guess the reason you wanted me to wake up?”

“You don’t have to guess. I have to get up in about ten minutes and I’m going to show you the reason I wanted you to open those beautiful brown eyes.”

“Show me.”

Hyde Park Road. North Santa Fe.

Aziza had questions at breakfast about the new job. “I’m not clear on why you accepted the position Brad offered you, Lance.”

He smiled. “I’m not either. I didn’t want the job, and I guess I went to the interview he set up because I liked the guy.”

“And then?”

“And then I found out that the position Brad is filling was for their homicide Lieutenant who died. While the man was in the hospital things got way out of control and when I saw the stack of murder books on the empty desk…” Lance shrugged. “I wanted to help Brad clean up the mess. Best I can explain it.”

“That makes sense to me. You’re a good person, Lance Rivard. Brad needs help and you agreed to help him. You don’t need a better reason than that.”

“Now, I have to go back to Houston and either sell or rent my house, pack up of my stuff and put what I’m not bringing into storage.”

“When does the new job start?”

“In a week, but only desk duty until I can pass the physical. That will work out because I’ll have to go over all those cases and see why they haven’t been closed.”

“A lot of reading.”

“There will be, babe. And I’m not familiar with Santa Fe, or the state of New Mexico, so there will be a lot to learn in a short time about all kinds of things.”

Aziza wasn’t sure if she was happy Lance was fully committing, or not. Secretly, she had hoped he would go back to his job in Houston and let her get on with her mission.

Lance’s phone rang as he was finishing his coffee. “Joe, where are you?”

“Don’t have a fuckin’ clue, but I’m headed towards Albuquerque, and the GPS says I’ll be in Santa Fe by noon.”

“Okay, noon. Let me know where you are and I’ll meet you.”

“Copy that.”

“He’s coming to arrest Meg?” asked Aziza.

“Yes.”

“Do you know where she is?”

“I do. I did a bit of digging and found out.”

“And you’re going to let it happen?”

“I have to, Aziza. It’s my duty and I can’t stop Joe from doing his job.”

Aziza ran down the hall to her bedroom, locked herself in the ensuite and called Meg.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Lance says he knows where you are.”

“He can’t know that.”

“Says he does, and Joe McCarthy will be here in Santa Fe by noon to arrest you.”

“Fuck.”

“Let me know if I can help in any way and I’ll do whatever you need me to do.”

“Thanks. I’ll talk to Sloan.”

“Does he have a last name now?”

“If he does, I don’t know it.
